Health-
Because we will be traveling in altitudes of approximately up to12,500 ft at times, and up to 14,000 ft on the Lake Titicaca part of tour, we recommend you check with your physician if you have any health issues or concerns. Most healthy people acclimate to altitude readily with only mild initial symptoms or side effects. We will suggest several supplements that you can take to effectively assist your body in the acclimation process (see below), as well as, special breathing techniques. Your doctor can also prescribe for you an altitude sickness medication. Hydration is the most important prevention to alitude sickness. Carrying packets of electrolytes to add to bottled water is a good idea.
Because we will not be in any tropical area shots are not necessary, however, having your doctor prescribe an antibiotic to have on hand in case of ingesting bacteria from contaminated water or food.
Bring your supplements and prescriptions, personal first aid, and sunscreen!
We travel with a well stocked first aid kit, and oxygen tanks are available if needed. Medical care is readily available in most places.
Fitness Level- If you are in basic good health and able to easily walk and do light hiking, you should have no problem on this tour. We take our time on all hikes and if needed a horse can be provided on the steeper hikes. Again, please consult your physician in advance if you have any concerns about your health in relation to this tour.
Food and Water Safety-
Drink only bottled water - even when brushing your teeth!! Eating only cooked foods, fruits and vegetables with peels is best, to avoid contamination or bacteria. Most hotels and restaurants have excellent hygiene in preparing food, and there are lots of wonderful food in Peru to enjoy during your stay. Typicals meals will cost $10.00 to $15.00.
Bring your favorite snacks or any special foods you require. We will also provide you with one bottle of water per day.
SOME SUGGESTED SUPPLEMENTS and REMEDIES- Start taking a few weeks before traveling, and to bring with you to Peru-
Chlorophyll, in soft-gels or drops, great for adjusting to high altitude. This helps build more red blood cells which increases oxygenation of the blood. You can start taking them about several weeks before you leave and have them on hand while traveling in Peru. Chlorophyll also supports the digestion and liver. A good brand is ChlorOxygen by Herbal Medicine. We will monitor everyone closing at altitude to help you adjust, and will be providing coca tea and leaves which help with altitude adjustment.
Ginkgo Biloba - great for reducing symptoms of altitude sickness! Delivers oxygen to the brain and wards off headaches caused by high altitude and sudden ascent. Works really well if you start taking at least 5 days before and continue taking it in Peru. Suggest dose is 80- 120 mg twice a day.
A good homeopathic remedy for diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, is DIARRHEA by HEEL, in case you eat or drink something that doesn't agree with you.
Aquatabs- is great to purify water in case you have questions on it's purity. We will provide one bottle of water daily, but you will need to buy your additional bottled drinking water while you are there, to be safe. It is easily available to purchase and inexpensive.
It is very important to drink lots of water to acclimate to high altitude. Please arrive hydrated and avoid alcohol for a few days.
Other Details and What to Bring-
